The ADHD Morning Routine Chart That Survives Week Three

Why the last chart died

Working memory is the ADHD brain's weakest muscle, and a chart on the wall is a prosthetic for it - but only if it is run right. Most charts do not die because the kid "stopped caring." They die because a parent was doing the checking, the chart had eleven steps, or one bad week ended in a guilt speech instead of a restart. All three are fixable, none of them are your kid's fault, and none of them are yours either: nobody hands parents the operating manual. This is the manual.

The five rules (the chart works when you stop working)

These are printed inside the kit's Visual Routine Kit, word for word:

  1. The kid checks the box - never you. The checkmark is half the reward. Do it for them and the chart becomes your chore and their wallpaper.
  2. Five steps max, one action per step. A 12-step chart is a poster, not a plan.
  3. Hang it where the routine happens. Morning chart at the bedroom door. Eye level. THEIR eye level.
  4. One phrase, forever: "check your chart." Every repeated instruction gets replaced by those three words. You are transferring the plan from your voice to the wall.
  5. Praise the check, never grade the miss. Ten seconds of real enthusiasm per checked box. Zero commentary on empty ones.

What goes on a morning chart

Our free printable ships with five kid-checkable steps ending in "Shoes on - blast off!" and a "this week I'm working on" line. If you build your own instead, keep each step one physical action ("backpack by the door," not "get ready"), and let the kid have a say in the wording - their fingerprint on the chart is part of why they run it. The restart rule (this is the whole trick)

The week will come when the chart goes unchecked for three days and you will be tempted to either give a speech or quietly retire it. Do neither: restart at half size - three steps for two days, then grow it back. No backfill, no speech. Falling off is weather, not failure, and a system that restarts in five minutes is the only kind an ADHD house keeps. This one design rule is the reason the whole kit calls itself restart-proof.

FAQ

What age does a morning routine chart work for?

Roughly 4 to 12 with the format tuned by age: picture step-cards the kid physically moves for the youngest, checkbox charts for elementary kids, and for tweens and teens fewer emojis and more ownership (they build the chart, you stay out of it). Should the chart have rewards attached?

It can, but it does not have to start there. The checkmark itself is half the reward, and praise for the check does real work. If your kid needs more pull, connect the chart to a token system - one token for finishing the routine before the timer - and read the five laws that keep token systems alive first.

My kid ignores the chart completely. Now what?

Check the five rules in order: who is doing the checking (rule 1 is the most-broken one), how many steps (over five = shrink it), where it hangs (their eye level, where the routine happens), and whether "check your chart" has actually replaced the verbal nagging. If all four hold, restart at half size with the kid re-picking the step wording - ownership revives more charts than any sticker.

Do I need a special chart for school mornings vs weekends?
