504 Accommodations for ADHD That Teachers Actually Implement

TL;DR. The accommodations that survive past October are specific, few, and cheap for the teacher to run. Ask for your top five, written with who does what and when, not a 20-item wish list. The rule: specific and few beats broad and many

Schools say yes faster to specific asks. That line is printed inside the School Advocacy Kit because it is the single biggest difference between a 504 plan that runs and a 504 plan that exists.

Two failure modes kill most plans. The first is vagueness: "teacher will check in with student" is unenforceable, so it quietly stops. The fix is the who-what-when rewrite: "Ms. Rivera confirms the assignment is written down before the bell, daily." The second is volume: a plan with 20 accommodations signals that none of them matter. A plan with five signals that all five do.

So work the menu below like a menu. Circle everything that fits your kid, then cut to the five that would change the most school days. That is what you bring to the meeting, along with the free prep sheet.

The menu, part 1: in the classroom

These are the highest-implementation accommodations because most cost the teacher almost nothing:

  1. Seat near the teacher, away from the door and window
  2. Instructions given one at a time, written AND spoken
  3. Teacher check-in after instructions ("tell me the first step")
  4. Movement breaks every 20-30 minutes (an errand, water, a stretch)
  5. Fidget tool or standing desk allowed
  6. A discreet signal between teacher and kid for refocusing
  7. Warning before transitions

The menu, part 2: work and tests

  1. Assignments chunked with checkpoints
  2. Reduced homework load (quality over volume)
  3. Extended time on classwork when needed
  4. Copy of class notes or teacher outlines provided
  5. Assignments posted online so parents can verify
  6. Credit for late work while systems are being built
  7. Extended time on tests (typically 1.5x)
  8. Quiet room or small-group testing
  9. Tests split across sessions
  10. Directions read aloud and confirmed

The test accommodations matter more every year your kid gets older: they are also the paper trail that supports accommodations on state testing and, much later, college-board testing.

The menu, part 3: communication and behavior

  1. Weekly home-school note or app check-in
  2. Positive-behavior plan (paying starts, not punishing misses)
  3. A break pass the kid can use before the storm, no questions asked
  4. No loss of recess as a consequence

That last one gets pushback, so know your ground: for a kid whose plan exists because of attention and self-regulation, taking away the day's one big movement outlet as punishment works directly against everything else on this list. Ask for it to be written in plainly.

How to write an accommodation so it actually happens

Every item you pick gets the same treatment in the meeting: what exactly happens, who does it, and when. Then it gets the follow-up treatment after the meeting: a same-day email listing what was agreed, who owns each item, and the check-in date. Verbal agreements evaporate by October; the email version does not.

Six weeks in, run the only audit that matters: is each of the five actually happening? The weekly home-school note (menu part 3, item 1) is how you know without interrogating your kid. If something on paper is not happening in the room, that is a kind email, not a confrontation: "The plan lists X - can we get that running this week?"

How many accommodations should a 504 plan have?

There is no legal limit, but plans with a focused handful get implemented and plans with twenty get skimmed. Pick the five that would change the most school days; you can always amend the plan later, and adding one that proved necessary is an easy yes.

Can I ask for accommodations that aren't on a standard list?

Yes. A 504 plan is individualized by definition. If your kid needs something specific (a laminated checklist taped to the desk, a second set of textbooks at home), ask for it in who-what-when language.

Does a 504 plan cover state testing too?

Testing accommodations written into the plan generally carry to state assessments, though each state publishes its own allowed-supports rules. Ask in the meeting: "which of these apply on state testing, and what does the state require to approve them?"

What if the teacher just doesn't follow the plan?

Start friendly and in writing: point at the specific plan item and ask for it to start this week. If it keeps not happening, escalate to the 504 coordinator with your dated emails attached. A 504 plan is a legal document, not a suggestion - but the paper-first, warm-tone route resolves most of it without a fight.
